Seattle hotel bookings drop 21% as World Cup tourism falls short

Hotel bookings in Seattle are about 21% lower than a year earlier, making the city the only U.S. World Cup host seeing a decline in inbound travelers. Nearly 80% of hoteliers in Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco report booking paces below expectations, attributing the slump to visa barriers, broader geopolitical concerns and FIFA’s early room‑block releases that created a false demand signal.

Airspace restrictions imposed by the FAA around Lumen Field for match days have added logistical challenges for local aviation and tourism businesses. Former Seattle Sounders announcer Ross Fletcher dismissed the data as “nonsense,” arguing that Seattle remains a “bona fide soccer hotbed” and that the match‑ups may not attract the same fan bases as other venues.

The combined effect of reduced international demand and operational constraints has led hotels in the region to cut rates and reassess the expected economic benefits of hosting World Cup matches.
