Seattle launches Connection Court for low-level offenders

Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans has announced the launch of ‘Connection Court,’ a new sentencing strategy for low-level, nonviolent misdemeanor offenders. The program aims to replace traditional fines or jail time with access to services such as substance use treatment, job support, health benefits, and peer support.

Designed to break cycles of recidivism, the court requires participants to commit no additional misdemeanors for a 90-day period and demonstrate participation in at least two types of services, such as addiction counseling. The initiative has received support from Mayor Katie Wilson and local leaders, who emphasized the importance of tailored approaches and accountability.

Connection Court serves as a successor to the city’s previous ‘Community Court’ model, which was discontinued in 2023. While the new program offers pathways to employment through organizations like the Downtown Seattle Association’s ambassador program, some public defenders have criticized the model as being similar to the previous system that was ultimately scrapped.
