Seattle Mariners demote top prospect Colt Emerson to Triple-A

The Seattle Mariners have optioned top prospect and starting shortstop Colt Emerson to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. In a corresponding move, the club has selected the contract of utility player Brock Roden.

Emerson, who entered the season as a consensus top-ten prospect and holds an eight-year, $95 million contract extension, has struggled significantly at the Major League level. In 69 games, he recorded a .190 batting average, a .246 on-base percentage, and a .335 slugging percentage. His performance was marked by a high strikeout rate of approximately 34 percent, including a game against the New York Yankees where he struck out in four consecutive at-bats.

With J.P. Crawford on the injured list, the Mariners are expected to utilize Leo Rivas at shortstop, while Roden will provide depth at third base and other utility roles.
