Lázaro Montes called up to MLB by Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have called up 21-year-old Cuban outfielder Lázaro Montes to the Major Leagues. Montes is expected to join the team on September 1 as rosters expand to 28 players, potentially making his debut during a series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Montes arrives following a historic minor league season in which he hit 38 home runs across Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma. This total broke a 67-year-old record for the most home runs in a single minor league season by a Cuban player, previously held by Juan Francisco ‘Pancho’ Herrera.

Ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Mariners organization and No. 56 overall by MLB Pipeline, the 6-foot-5 power hitter has recorded a .928 OPS this season. Originally signed as an international free agent in 2022, Montes is viewed as a significant addition to the Mariners' lineup as they navigate the end of the season.
