Seattle Mayor launches task force to address fragile economy
Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has ordered the creation of a new task force to address what she describes as a “fragile moment” for the city’s economy. The executive order aims to develop recommendations for building a more resilient economy as the city grapples with tech layoffs, high office vacancies, and boarded-up storefronts.
While an independent assessment characterized Seattle as a “superstar innovation hub,” concerns remain regarding the city’s ability to capitalize on current trends. Economic development experts note that while the city is well-positioned for the medium term, it may be institutionally ill-equipped to handle shifts in the industry. There are also concerns regarding the growing economic gap between Seattle and neighboring Bellevue, as well as the impact of high taxes on the industries driving regional growth.
The task force is expected to work over the course of a year, though specific funding sources and the potential for business contributions to the initiative have not yet been determined.
