Seattle Mayor proposes new firearm regulations

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has announced a new approach to gun violence prevention, seeking to work with the Washington state legislature to implement stricter firearms regulations. The proposal includes regulating firearms in “sensitive spaces,” restricting firearms at the city’s center, and updating laws regarding juvenile firearm possession and sentencing.

Because Washington state law preempts most local gun regulations, any significant changes to carry restrictions would require legislative action at the state level. Current state rules already limit firearms in certain city-run venues, such as stadiums and convention centers, though exceptions exist for individuals with valid concealed pistol licenses. The Mayor’s proposal has not yet clarified if licensed concealed carry would be permitted in the newly proposed “sensitive spaces.”
