Seattle moves high‑tech portable restrooms amid FIFA World Cup preparations

Seattle installed four high‑tech, solar‑powered portable bathrooms built by Throne Labs in anticipation of the FIFA Men's World Cup. Two of the units were placed in Pioneer Square and were accessed for free through a QR code, the Throne app or a text message as part of a one‑year pilot program.

A Pioneer Square property owner objected to the facilities being near his space, and the city agreed to relocate the two restrooms to another spot within the district. Seattle spent more than $500,000 on the four units, and during the six match days the city will also provide over 100 traditional portable toilets. Public comments are being solicited to assess the practicality of the high‑tech restrooms for future use.
