Seattle police watchdog reviews Kurt Cobain death investigation claims
The Seattle Office of Police Accountability has launched a formal review following allegations that former Police Chief Shon Barnes privately acknowledged inconsistencies in the 1994 death investigation of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
The probe stems from a complaint filed by the volunteer research group “Who Killed Kurt?,” which advocates for reopening the case. The group alleges that during a November 2025 meeting, Barnes admitted that certain forensic evidence contradicted the original police report. Specifically, researchers pointed out that no blood was found on Cobain’s left hand, despite that being the hand allegedly used to hold the shotgun barrel near his mouth. The group suggests this could indicate the hand was placed on the weapon after the fatal shot was fired.
Cobain was found dead at age 27 in a greenhouse at his Seattle residence in April 1994. While investigators ruled the death a suicide within hours, the research group maintains that a peer-reviewed paper supports a murder theory. Although the Seattle Police Department announced in January that it would not reopen the investigation, the current review focuses on whether the former chief’s alleged comments warrant further official action.
