Seattle proposes expansion of high-tech public restroom program

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has proposed a $1.4 million annual budget to expand the city’s high-tech public restroom program. The initiative aims to increase the number of units from four in Pioneer Square to 10 citywide.

The restrooms are provided by Throne Labs through a rental agreement rather than a purchase. Each unit costs approximately $116,000 per year, a fee that covers manufacturing, placement, cleaning, and maintenance.

Users access the facilities via an app, QR code, text message, or special key card. The high-tech units feature a 10-minute usage limit, after which the door automatically opens.
