Seattle residents file recall charges against Mayor Katie Wilson

Two Seattle residents have filed recall charges against Mayor Katie Wilson, alleging she has neglected her legal duty to maintain public safety and peace. The charges, submitted to the King County Elections Office, cite concerns regarding crime, gun violence, and open-air drug activity during her first eight months in office. The filing also criticizes Wilson’s decision to seek the resignation of Police Chief Shon Barnes.

The recall effort follows the July 26 shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival, which resulted in three deaths. If the charges pass a technical review by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and meet the legal standards of misfeasance or malfeasance, a judge will allow proponents to circulate petitions. To trigger a special election, organizers must gather approximately 70,000 valid signatures.

Public reaction to the potential recall is divided. Some residents expressed frustration over city management and safety, while others continue to support the mayor. This marks the first recall attempt against a Seattle mayor since 2020.
