Seattle's Seafair Festival Implements Tight Security for 180,000 Attendees

The annual Seafair Weekend Festival returned to Genesee Park in Seattle, drawing an expected crowd of about 180,000 over three days. Organizers transformed the event into a fully gated, ticket‑required gathering and deployed extensive security measures, including weapons‑detection systems, bag checks and bans on weapons, drugs, alcohol, fireworks and drones. Roughly 300 security personnel from the Seattle Police Department, Axis Security and Kaeka Group Security were on site.

Emily Cantrell, Seafair’s president and CEO and a survivor of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting, said the heightened protocols reflect her personal experience and the organization’s commitment to safety. The Seattle Police Department announced it will increase patrols at major summer events.

Transit authorities provided additional guidance for festival‑goers, noting that Metro’s Route 50 serves Genesee Park from several Link stations and a shuttle runs between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on festival days. The update also referenced ongoing Ballard Link project milestones and other concurrent summer festivals in the region.
