Seaview Apartments evacuated in Paceville due to safety concerns

Residents of the Seaview Apartments in Paceville have been evacuated after authorities determined the building is no longer fit for habitation. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) filed a formal report with the police following the decision, which was made in coordination with the Government Architect, police, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority, the Civil Protection Department, the Water Services Corporation, and Enemalta.

The evacuation follows a report by Professor Alex Torpiano, which concluded that the building's condition is the result of years of inadequate maintenance by owners and occupants. While an initial investigation in July 2025 found no immediate danger, it identified necessary remedial works that were supposed to be completed immediately. A year later, these works remained unfinished, and the building's condition had continued to deteriorate, specifically due to sewage leaking into internal shafts.

The BCA noted that it had reminded apartment owners as recently as June 2026 to reach an agreement and begin maintenance to mitigate risks, but no action was taken. The authority clarified that the structural issues are not related to nearby construction works.
