Seaweed biodiversity interest rises in the Netherlands
A renewed edition of the Seaweed Field Guide has been released following two completely sold-out printings. Author Luna van der Loos of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center notes that since the guide's initial release in 2021, seaweed observations via citizen science platforms like Waarneming.nl have quadrupled, rising from approximately 4,000 observations in the preceding five years to nearly 16,000 between 2021 and 2025.
In conjunction with growing interest in marine life, ecologists from Naturalis will conduct research in Katwijk on August 22. The team, led by Jan-Niklas Macher, will use microscopes to study microscopic organisms such as tardigrades and nematodes living within washed-up seaweed. This study aims to understand how the removal of seaweed affects local biodiversity. The event is part of a summer beach clean-up organized by We Are Nature, Natuur om de hoek, and Natuurcentrum Katwijk, and invites the public to participate in beachcombing and discovery.
