Seb Group faces legal action over Tefal PFAS emissions
The Seb Group, owner of the Tefal brand, is facing legal action from environmental organizations regarding the use and emission of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In France, associations including Notre Affaire à Tous, Générations Futures, and ClientEarth have issued a formal notice to the company, demanding a plan to cease the use of these substances and a revision of its vigilance plan to comply with legal obligations regarding environmental and health risks.
Legal proceedings have been initiated at the Grenoble Administrative Court to seek an urgent injunction to block emissions from the Tefal plant in Rumilly, Haute-Savoie. Local associations, such as Agir Ensemble pour Rumilly et l’Albanais (Aera), have expressed concerns over uncontrolled atmospheric emissions and a lack of response from authorities.
In response to the pressure, Seb Group maintains that its products, specifically those using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), are safe for consumers. The company distinguishes PTFE, a large and chemically inert polymer, from smaller, bioaccumulative PFAS molecules like PFOA, which Seb abandoned in 2012. The company stated it will examine the matter closely and respond within the legal framework.
