Sebastian Fitzek warns adults against comparing lives to Instagram content
German author Sebastian Fitzek has expressed concern regarding the tendency of adults to perceive staged social media content, particularly on Instagram, as reality. Fitzek noted that many people use these curated images as a benchmark for their own lives, leading to unrealistic comparisons.
In discussions with adults, Fitzek compares the phenomenon to comparing oneself to Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt, noting that social media portrayals of effortless domesticity and luxury are often as fictional as a Marvel comic. He emphasizes that such content should be viewed strictly as entertainment rather than a reflection of real life.
The Berlin-based bestselling author, who recently released his 25th thriller ‘Der Nachtzug’, stated that he frequently has to remind his own children that what they see online is fantasy and bears no relation to reality.
