Sebastian Lege reveals cancer battle and criticizes ZDF ahead of RTL move
TV chef Sebastian Lege, known for the ZDF series ‘Besseresser’, has revealed that he continued filming his food documentaries while undergoing treatment for lymphoma. Lege disclosed that he faced two bouts of cancer, including a second instance six years ago where he would undergo chemotherapy in the morning and film in the afternoon.
Lege is set to leave ZDF at the end of 2026 to join the RTL Group in 2027. His departure has sparked a public disagreement between the presenter and the broadcaster. Lege criticized ZDF for stifling his creativity, claiming his proposals for new formats were rejected and that he felt pressured to focus on existing themes, which he felt compromised his professional reputation.
ZDF has rejected these claims, stating that the collaboration lasted over 13 successful years and that they continuously implemented developments for the ‘Besseresser’ brand. The broadcaster maintains that they would have liked to continue the partnership under appropriate conditions.
