Sebastian Sawe, Kenyan runner, breaks two‑hour barrier at London Marathon

Kenyan athlete Sebastian Sawe completed the London Marathon in 1 hour 59 minutes 30 seconds, becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours. He was followed 11 seconds later by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, who finished in 1 hour 59 minutes 41 seconds. The race also saw Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda finish in 2 hours 00 minutes 28 seconds and a women's only record set by Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa with a time of 2 hours 15 minutes 41 seconds.

Sawe’s performance was supported by a high‑carbohydrate fueling plan devised by Maurten’s sports‑technology head Josh Rowe, who reported that ingesting 230 grams of carbs during the effort can boost performance by 6‑8 percent. Rowe noted that nutrition often receives less attention than shoe technology, which can improve running economy by about 4 percent. After the race, Sawe celebrated his achievement with Kenya’s President William Ruto at State House in Nairobi.
