Sebastien Pocognoli appointed Scotland national team manager

Sebastien Pocognoli has been appointed as the new head coach of the Scotland national football team, becoming the country’s first foreign manager in over 20 years. Following his unveiling, Pocognoli has begun establishing relationships with key squad members, including captain Andy Robertson, whom he described as a “very passionate captain.” He intends to hold further discussions with players such as John McGinn and Scott McTominay to build rapport ahead of Scotland’s Nations League match against Slovenia.

Scottish Football Association (SFA) chief executive Ian Maxwell addressed the decision to hire a non-Scottish manager, noting that the lack of available top-tier domestic candidates was a significant issue. Maxwell highlighted that previous potential candidates, such as Derek McInnes and David Moyes, were unavailable due to club commitments.

Maxwell emphasized the need for the SFA to improve coach education and development pathways to ensure a stronger pool of homegrown managerial talent is available for future vacancies. He noted that the trend of employing foreign managers is increasingly common in modern international football.
