Sebastião Mendes, former mayor of João Alfredo, dies at 75
Sebastião Manoel dos Santos, widely known as Sebastião Mendes, the former mayor of João Alfredo in Pernambuco, has died at the age of 75. He passed away on Sunday, August 30, at the Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças in Recife.
Mendes had a long political career in the municipality, serving four terms as mayor (1977–1982, 1989–1992, 1997–2000, and 2001–2004) and also serving as a city councilor. In recognition of his contributions to the region, current Mayor Zé Martins has declared three days of official mourning and a facultative holiday for Monday, August 31.
The wake is scheduled to take place at the Ginásio Poliesportivo Djair Santos, with the burial set for 4:00 p.m. at the Cemitério de São José in João Alfredo.
