The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has released its examination priorities for fiscal year 2027, signaling increased scrutiny of emerging technologies and evolving market infrastructure. The Division of Examinations plans to oversee more than 34,000 registrants, including investment advisers, broker-dealers, and clearing agencies.

Key focus areas include tokenization, which is identified as a high-risk area for clearing-agency examinations and an emerging trend under Regulation Systems Compliance and Integrity (SCI). The agency will also examine the impact of "super intelligence" (AI) and quantum computing on market operations, compliance, and fraud prevention.

Other significant priorities include private credit, complex or illiquid products, cybersecurity, and Treasury clearing reforms. The SEC intends to evaluate how these technologies and financial products affect risk management, investor protection, and the integrity of market systems. The agency noted that these priorities are intended to help regulators adapt to rapidly changing market conditions and emerging threats.
