SEC Chair Paul Atkins pursues crypto regulatory framework
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has reaffirmed the agency's commitment to establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States. This push comes despite recent legislative setbacks regarding the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which failed to reach the necessary 60-vote threshold in the Senate.
The CLARITY Act was intended to resolve jurisdictional disputes by clarifying whether specific digital assets fall under the oversight of the SEC or the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). In the absence of legislative progress, Atkins has signaled that the SEC intends to utilize its own rulemaking authority to provide market clarity.
Atkins' approach represents a shift toward engagement with market participants, moving away from the enforcement-heavy strategy of his predecessor. He also expressed support for Patrick Witt, Executive Director of the White House Crypto Council, noting Witt's role in advancing the administration's vision to strengthen the U.S. position in the crypto sector.
