SEC fines Tennessee $500,000 for field storming after Alabama win
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has issued a $500,000 fine to the University of Tennessee for violating league policy regarding access to competition areas. The penalty follows a 26-10 upset victory over Alabama at Neyland Stadium, during which fans stormed the field in celebration.
Under SEC regulations, the fine is to be paid to Alabama. The policy mandates that institutions limit field access to student-athletes, coaches, officials, and authorized personnel to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators. While the conference allows schools to establish specific procedures for fan celebrations on the playing surface, these plans must be submitted to the conference office in advance.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has the authority to reduce the fine to $100,000 if Tennessee can demonstrate that it made a full attempt to prevent the field rush, that only a few individuals breached the area, and that there was minimal interaction with the visiting team.
