SEC midseason awards name Kentucky most surprising team

Associated Press writers have released the SEC midseason awards, highlighting Kentucky as the conference’s most surprising team. After a preseason prediction of 14th place, the Wildcats have achieved a 5-1 start under first-year head coach Will Stein, marking the program’s best start for a new coach since 1913.

Individual honors include Trinidad Chambliss being named the top offensive player for his efficiency and dual-threat capabilities, and Texas junior edge rusher Colin Simmons being named the top defensive player following a record-setting sack performance. Faizon Brandon of Tennessee was recognized as the top first-year freshman.

As the season progresses, Kentucky prepares to face the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma enters the matchup with a strong defense, ranked 28th nationally in scoring defense, despite facing offensive challenges and quarterback John Mateer’s recent struggles with efficiency.
