Secihti approves funding for Colima flood warning system
The Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti) has approved up to 2.125 million pesos to enhance an early warning and monitoring system for extreme hydrometeorological phenomena in Colima.
Led by Dr. Raúl Aquino Santos, a researcher at the University of Colima, the project aims to anticipate floods to provide authorities with more time to protect the population. The funding will support the maturation of technology, allowing for the update of components and installation at strategic points in Colima and Villa de Álvarez.
The initiative builds upon the Mexico-United Kingdom EWIN (Emergency Water Information Network) project started in 2017. This system utilizes low-cost devices to gather data directly from riverbeds, offering a more affordable alternative to expensive satellite-based infrastructure.
