SECL contributes 17% to India's total coal production

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) contributed approximately 17 percent to India’s total coal production during the 2025-26 fiscal year, according to the central government. Within Coal India Limited (CIL), SECL accounted for about 23 percent of total production.

India’s total coal production reached a provisional 1.04 billion tonnes in FY 2025-26, marking the second consecutive year the country has surpassed the 1 billion tonne milestone. This sector remains critical to national energy security, as coal supports roughly 73 percent of India’s electricity generation needs.

Operating primarily in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, SECL has seen significant growth. Its production rose from 34.2 million tonnes in 1985-86 to 176.28 million tonnes in FY 2025-26. Additionally, the company’s coal offtake increased from 122.03 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 178.63 million tonnes in the current fiscal year, representing a growth of over 46 percent. SECL currently supplies coal to 13 states.
