Second-hand platforms face rise in phishing scams
Online second-hand marketplaces are seeing an increase in phishing scams targeting sellers. On platforms such as Vinted, fraudulent actors have caused financial damages ranging from four to five figures.
The scam typically begins when a potential buyer requests specific product details, such as a video, to move the conversation from the platform to email. Once in contact via email, scammers send convincing fake notifications claiming a payment failed, subsequently requesting PayPal credentials or credit card information, sometimes via QR codes.
To mitigate risks, users are advised to only conduct transactions through the official, secured channels of the online portal, avoid accepting checks, and report suspicious offers. The European Consumer Centre provides additional resources for safe trading.
