Second-hand shopping grows as students seek sustainable fashion

Retailer Buffalo Exchange is hosting its annual Student Discount Day on August 22, offering students an additional 15 percent off purchases at all locations upon presentation of a valid school ID. The event includes raffles, giveaways, and treats to assist students with back-to-school wardrobe updates.

Beyond individual retail promotions, there is a growing emphasis on second-hand shopping as a sustainable alternative to fast fashion. The fast fashion industry is responsible for approximately 10 percent of global carbon emissions and contributes significantly to landfill waste due to the short lifespan of synthetic textiles.

Students are increasingly utilizing various platforms to balance style and budget, including in-person charity shops and online resale applications such as Vinted and Depop. While online platforms offer convenience, some users note challenges with rising prices from independent resellers on certain apps.
