Secondigliano prison signal jammers linked to local network disruptions

Residents near the Secondigliano prison in Naples are reporting significant telecommunications disruptions, including mobile network failures and issues with electronic medical devices and car alarms. Local officials suspect these outages are linked to the recent installation of signal jammers within the prison facility.

The jammer project, a pilot program ordered by the Ministry of Justice, is the first of its kind in Italy. It aims to block illegal calls made by inmates, particularly those linked to organized crime. Early reports indicate the system has already blocked over 24,000 illicit calls.

Local representatives, including Municipalità 8 President Nicola Nardella and Commissioner Salvatore Musella, have called for clarity and immediate solutions. While acknowledging the importance of prison security, officials expressed concern over the impact on citizens in surrounding areas such as Piscinola, Marianella, Chiaiano, and Scampia. Regional Councilor Salvatore Flocco has also been notified to investigate the cause of the malfunctions.
