Secondigliano prison tests signal jammers to block inmate communications
Authorities in Italy have successfully tested a communication inhibition system, using signal jammers, at the Secondigliano prison in Naples. During the trial, approximately 24,000 attempts to access networks or transmit data were recorded and blocked within a single day. The system is designed to prevent inmates, particularly leaders of organized crime, from using mobile phones to coordinate illegal activities from behind bars.
Undersecretary to the Justice Alberto Balboni reported that the test was completed without prisoner protests, despite the deployment of 250 prison police officers to manage security risks. While the technology aims to make mobile phones useless for inmates, it allows for authorized communications by prison staff. The successful trial may lead to the expansion of this technology to other correctional facilities across Italy.
In separate legal developments, a man in Vibo Valentia was transferred from house arrest to prison after violating electronic monitoring restrictions by using social media. In Nuoro, a major anti-drug operation resulted in seven precautionary measures following investigations into marijuana and cocaine trafficking. Additionally, a 37-year-old in Sulmona received a definitive one-year sentence for assaulting a police officer eight years ago.
