Secret Path multimedia project examined for its impact on Canadian reconciliation

Secret Path is a multimedia project created by Canadian musician Gord Downie and comic‑artist Jeff Lemire that combines music, text, imagery and animated film to tell the story of Chanie Wenjack, an Indigenous boy who died in 1966 while fleeing a residential school. The project aims to promote healing and reconciliation in Canada.

A scholarly analysis explores why Secret Path resonated so strongly, applying defamiliarisation concepts from Viktor Shklovsky and Bertolt Brecht, as well as cultural foreignness theory. The study argues that the project's impact stems from both its multimedia aesthetic techniques and Downie's unique social and political standing in Canada.
