Sector 1 Local Police deploy 130 body-worn cameras
The Sector 1 Local Police in Bucharest have been equipped with 130 body-worn cameras to record interventions and increase transparency. These devices allow for real-time video and audio transmission to a central dispatch center, enabling supervisors to monitor field operations and observe potential law violations as they occur.
Each camera is assigned to a specific officer via a nominal card, ensuring accountability for the footage. The devices feature a 12-hour battery life and remain in a standby mode until the officer manually activates recording during an intervention. Recordings are stored for six months, unless they are required for judicial investigations.
Sector 1 Mayor George Tuță stated that the technology is intended to protect both citizens and officers by providing an objective record of incidents and complaints. This implementation follows legislative changes that now permit local police to use audio-video equipment, a right previously reserved for national police forces.
