Sector 3 demolition site faces fines over asbestos handling
Authorities have intervened at a demolition site in Bucharest's Sector 3 following reports of illegal handling of hazardous materials. Residents raised concerns regarding the chaotic demolition of a former hall at the Republica Pipe Factory, alleging that asbestos-cement plates were being crushed by heavy machinery rather than being carefully dismantled as required by law.
The Environmental Guard inspected the site on Basarabia Boulevard and identified multiple irregularities. Consequently, the agency halted the mechanical destruction of the asbestos plates and issued fines totaling 65,000 lei. The Public Health Directorate (DSP) has also announced plans for an inspection.
The demolition project, valued at 210,000 euros plus VAT, was contracted in July by Administrare Active Sector 3 SRL, an entity under the authority of the Sector 3 Local Council. The work is being carried out by Grand Eco Trans Forte SRL, a private company based in Ilfov. While the local administration has shifted responsibility to the contractor, the project is scheduled for completion in October.
