Alzheimer's cases rising in Romania amid calls for early diagnosis

On the occasion of International Alzheimer's Day, health authorities and medical professionals in Romania are highlighting the rising prevalence of dementia and the critical importance of early diagnosis.

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported 12,173 new Alzheimer's cases last year, though experts believe the actual number is significantly higher due to undiagnosed cases or late detection. Projections suggest dementia cases in Romania could rise from 341,195 in 2019 to 577,177 by 2050.

In Brașov, reported cases have also seen an increase, rising to 1,953 in 2026 compared to 1,712 the previous year. To address these challenges, Eli Lilly and Clinica Neuroaxis have launched a strategic partnership to facilitate medical innovation and experience exchange for patients.

Medical specialists emphasize that early detection through biomarkers and recognizing behavioral changes—such as repetitive routines—can significantly improve quality of life. However, stigma and fear of diagnosis remain major barriers, with 46% of those affected or their families citing these as obstacles to seeking medical help.
