Nigeria Customs intercepts 399 rifles at Tin Can Island Port
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a massive shipment of illegal firearms at the Tin Can Island Port Command. Following a detailed examination and coupling process, officials confirmed the seizure of 399 fully assembled Jojef pump-action rifles.
In addition to the assembled weapons, the shipment contained a large cache of rifle components, including 89 frames, 16 heat shields, 10 trigger pins, three pistons, 25 locking lugs, 80 charging handles, 39 pistol-grip screws, 34 springs, 57 trigger groups, 66 foregrip latches, 45 foregrips or handguards, four pistol grips, and five barrels.
Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi warned that criminal networks often attempt to smuggle prohibited items through Nigeria’s borders and airports during major election cycles. The NCS is working in collaboration with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) to dismantle these trafficking networks. The seized armaments are scheduled to be handed over to the NCCSALW following a complete inventory and assessment.
The Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) commended the NCS for the interception, noting that such vigilance protects innocent transport operators from being implicated in criminal activities involving concealed contraband.
