Security and governance debate intensifies in State of Mexico
Political leaders and municipal authorities in the State of Mexico are presenting conflicting views on the region's security and governance.
Cristina Ruiz Sandoval, president of the PRI State Steering Committee, criticized the Morena administration, alleging that three years of governance have resulted in a decline in public services and rising crime. The PRI reported increases in several categories, including extortion (+20%), homicide (+53%), and human trafficking (+111%), while noting that 3,982 people have disappeared during this period.
Conversely, Toluca Mayor Ricardo Moreno Bastida reported that the perception of insecurity in the capital city fell to 71% in June, according to the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU). This figure represents a decrease from 80.7% in December 2025. The mayor attributed this change to municipal actions and methodological adjustments made with INEGI to ensure a more accurate sample of Toluca's communities.
