Security and staffing challenges impact education in Colombia and Peru

In Colombia, security concerns stemming from armed conflict are disrupting education in the Huila department. In municipalities such as Teruel, Baraya, and Algeciras, schools have faced suspensions or required safety interventions due to the presence of explosives and intensified violence. In Algeciras, authorities and the National Army have worked to secure educational spaces, including the controlled detonation of explosives, to allow for a gradual return to classes with flexible curricula.

In Peru, systemic issues are hindering the reporting of sexual violence against Awajun girls. A lack of sufficient teaching staff and linguistic barriers prevent victims from seeking justice. There is reported community fear that reporting aggressive teachers may lead to the removal of educators, leaving remote communities without any instructional staff, further complicating the protection of students.
