Security challenges and provocation prevention in Papua
Security forces in Papua face significant challenges in addressing the Armed Criminal Group (KKB), which the Indonesian government designated as a terrorist group in 2021. One primary obstacle identified by police is the group's ability to blend into local communities, making it difficult for authorities to distinguish members from regular citizens during operations.
In West Papua, Deputy Regional Police Chief Brigjen Pol Sulastiana has called upon the West Papua Contact Body of the Majelis Taklim (BKMT) to help prevent the spread of provocative information. Sulastiana emphasized the importance of religious leaders in promoting peace, tolerance, and social stability, urging the community to verify information before sharing it on social media to avoid misunderstandings and social conflict.
