Security concerns rise in Italy following separate assaults on female workers
Two separate incidents of assault and harassment against female employees have sparked safety concerns in Italy.
In Reggio Emilia, a 36-year-old man was reported to the authorities after allegedly assaulting and chasing a Trenitalia employee at the Piazzale Marconi railway station. The victim, who was providing passenger assistance, reported that the man harassed her and physically grabbed her shoulder before chasing her through a railway underpass toward the ticket office. The suspect, described as a homeless individual with a prior criminal record, was identified through surveillance footage and witness testimony.
In Cagliari, a medical radiology technician was harassed and pursued through the corridors of the San Michele hospital (Arnas Brotzu) until she reached the female changing rooms. The worker managed to lock herself inside to seek help, but the incident left her in a state of severe shock. The Uil Funzione Pubblica union has denounced the event, citing a lack of access control and security in hospital transit areas, and has called for improved protections for healthcare staff.
