Mexico: National movements and memorials rise for missing persons
As Mexico approaches the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances on August 30, various collectives and organizations are organizing memorial activities and calling for institutional support. In Zacatecas, official records indicate 3,961 missing persons, contributing to a national total of 130,178.
In Mexicali, the Célula de Búsqueda e Investigación de Personas Desaparecidas de Baja California reports that a memorial project is advancing, with construction potentially beginning before the end of 2026. Meanwhile, in Culiacán, families are preparing a “Memorial of Light” to be held in front of the State Human Rights Commission.
Other regional efforts include the Madres Guerreras collective placing search notices in León and a planned encounter for families in Cancún. In Puerto Vallarta, a local collective has issued an urgent call to identify the families of five men found dead, two of whom have been identified but remain unclaimed by relatives.
