Security experts warn of disinformation and hybrid threats in Baltics

Security experts and intelligence services are warning against a surge in social media disinformation and hybrid warfare tactics aimed at creating panic regarding potential Russian aggression in the Baltic states.

Security expert Meelis Oidsalu notes that social media algorithms amplify fear-based content, leading to a cycle where influencers and users spread unverified claims or old videos to gain engagement. This phenomenon, described as a 'fear rally,' can create a false impression of imminent conflict through the rapid spread of AI-generated imagery and unverified reports.

Simultaneously, European intelligence agencies have highlighted Russia's 'shadow war,' characterized by sabotage and terror acts intended to undermine NATO unity. While leaders such as Latvia's President Edgars Rinkēvičs suggest a large-scale military incursion remains unlikely, officials emphasize the need for heightened vigilance against hybrid threats and smaller-scale provocations. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has indicated that Russia's hybrid targets include Western nations supporting Ukraine, aiming to test the solidarity of NATO members.
