Security forces restructure counter-terrorism duties in Jammu and Kashmir

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are undergoing a significant operational restructuring and heightened readiness assessments. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is preparing to take over counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism responsibilities at 21 locations across the Udhampur-Kathua belt. This transition includes the deployment of specialized CoBRA jungle-warfare teams to enhance tactical capabilities in challenging terrain. While the CRPF assumes these new duties, the Indian Army and Rashtriya Rifles will maintain their established roles in the region to ensure a layered security approach.

In tandem with these structural changes, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma conducted an operational review in south Kashmir to assess troop readiness and the security grid. This review follows recent counter-terror operations, such as Operation Ashdar in the Budgam district, where security forces neutralized a terrorist affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in a forest hideout. The military leadership emphasized the necessity of seamless coordination between the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF to address asymmetric threats and maintain stability.
