Security guard and inmate face theft and fraud charges in Florida

A security guard at the Krome Service Processing Center in Miami has been arrested for allegedly stealing $5,382 from a detainee. Matthew Christian Torres, an employee of private contractor Akima Protective Services, was captured on surveillance footage placing the cash in a logbook and later concealing it in his clothing. Torres faces a felony charge of third-degree grand theft.

In a separate incident, Patrick Marquelle Turner was extradited to Florida after allegedly using a contraband cellphone while incarcerated at Georgia's Wheeler Correctional Facility to conduct impersonation scams. Turner reportedly pressured an elderly resident into depositing $5,600 into a cryptocurrency ATM by posing as a sheriff's office official claiming the victim had missed jury duty. Florida investigators believe inmates in Georgia prisons may be operating networks of such scams.
