Argentina’s security forces tighten patrols for World Cup quarter‑final vs Switzerland

On Saturday, Argentina’s police and municipal authorities mounted extensive security operations ahead of the World Cup 2026 quarter‑final between the national team and Switzerland, scheduled to start at 22:00 local time.

In Mendoza, about 300 officers were deployed, public transport was halted from 21:30, and checkpoints were set up across the province to prevent unauthorized vehicle movements after previous incidents of vandalism. In Tucumán, police announced a “wide preventive operation with reinforced controls,” warning that anyone involved in disturbances, drunk driving or public disorder would be detained.

Corrientes’ police chief Miguel Ángel Leguizamón detailed a deployment of roughly one hundred officers, twenty patrol cars and twenty motorbikes, imposing total vehicular bans on the Costanera and directing traffic through alternative routes, while allowing only pedestrians and motorcycles after checks. In Bahía Blanca, more than 120 police officers in coordination with municipal emergency services secured the Teatro Municipal area and commercial centre, while cleanup crews began restoring public spaces the following morning.

During the match, a 51‑year‑old man attempted to enter a house in the exclusive Country Grand Bell neighbourhood of Melchor Romero, was identified via video surveillance, and was detained on charges of illegal entry. The incident highlighted the rapid response of private security and police amid the nationwide focus on the game.
