Security risks emerge from employee-driven AI workflows
The rapid adoption of AI-assisted workflows and automated agents by employees is creating a phenomenon known as ‘wild code.’ While these tools increase efficiency by automating lead routing, summarizing requests, and managing data, they often outpace organizational security processes.
Security teams face several critical risks associated with these unmanaged builds, including excessive permissions where workflows access more data than necessary, and sensitive data exposure through model requests or logs. Additionally, these automations can lead to unintended actions without proper approval boundaries and ‘orphaned access,’ where workflows continue to run with active credentials after the original creator has left the company.
Addressing these vulnerabilities requires more than just employee education or sandboxes; organizations must establish clear ownership, identity tracing, and oversight to prevent useful automations from becoming unmanaged operational dependencies.
