France businesses face widespread looting and security concerns
Widespread looting and vandalism across several French cities, including Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, and Nice, have left at least 3,000 businesses affected. The unrest, which occurred during the weekend of October 17-18, 2026, has prompted the government to consider partial unemployment measures for affected workers.
Individual accounts highlight the intensity of the violence. In Paris, shopkeeper Assia Sanaa attempted to defend her store with an iron bar, expressing anger toward authorities for failing to provide adequate support. In Nice, Pierre Collin, a Micromania manager, was assaulted while attempting to block looters from entering his shop.
In response to the surge in property crime, business owners are increasingly looking toward advanced security technologies. These include fog generators designed to obscure visibility within a shop during an intrusion, as well as smart connected surveillance systems and reinforced physical barriers to deter and delay thieves.
