Security vs. convenience in 2FA management

Managing two-factor authentication (2FA) codes involves a trade-off between user convenience and security isolation. Using password managers like 1Password or Bitwarden allows for the automatic generation and filling of six-digit temporary codes, which synchronizes access across desktop and mobile devices and simplifies access sharing for families or teams.

However, centralizing both the password and the 2FA code within a single manager reduces the fundamental security principle of factor separation. If a master password is compromised or a device is infected with malware, the attacker may gain access to both layers of protection simultaneously.

A recommended compromise is a tiered approach: using password managers for daily convenience while maintaining separate, dedicated authentication tools for highly sensitive or critical accounts to ensure true isolation.
