Sedentary work habits and poor posture pose musculoskeletal risks

Prolonged sedentary behavior and poor posture during work hours are linked to significant musculoskeletal issues, including cervicalgia, lumbar pain, and muscle overload in the trapezius and rhomboids. Experts note that the primary risk is not just incorrect sitting, but maintaining static positions for extended periods, which causes stabilizer muscles to lose tone and disrupts the natural curvature of the spine.

To mitigate these risks, ergonomic adjustments are recommended. These include aligning computer screens at eye level, maintaining a 90-degree angle at the elbows and knees, and ensuring the back is supported by a lumbar rest. Additionally, the feet should remain flat on the floor or a footrest.

Beyond furniture, the phenomenon of forward shoulder posture—where the shoulders and scapula tilt anteriorly—is becoming increasingly common due to computer and mobile device use. This condition involves a complex neuromuscular imbalance affecting the pectoral muscles, trapezius, and serratus anterior, often accompanied by increased thoracic kyphosis.
