Sedrick Shaw named honorary captain for Iowa football season opener

Sedrick Shaw, the University of Iowa’s all-time leading rusher, will serve as honorary captain for the Hawkeyes’ season opener against Northern Illinois at Kinnick Stadium. This marks the second time Shaw has held the role, having previously served as honorary captain in 2012.

Shaw, who played for the Hawkeyes from 1993 to 1996, holds several program records, including career rushing yards (4,156), rushing touchdowns (33), rushing attempts (837), and 100-yard games (19). He is the only player in Iowa history to rush for over 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. During his collegiate career, he led the team to three bowl games and earned MVP honors in the 1995 Sun Bowl and the 1996 Alamo Bowl.

In addition to his honorary captaincy, Shaw is scheduled to be inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend. Following his professional career, which included time with the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals, he remains one of the most decorated players in the program's history.
