Sedum spectabile: Care guide for hardy autumn perennials

Sedum spectabile, commonly known as showy stonecrop, is a hardy perennial that blooms from mid-August until the first frosts in mid-October. The plant is characterized by thick stems, fleshy leaves, and dense flower clusters typically appearing in pink, white, or red.

For optimal growth, the plant requires a sunny location and well-draining, sandy soil. It is highly frost-resistant and drought-tolerant, performing better with minimal watering rather than excessive moisture. Because the clumps spread laterally, they should be planted with approximately 40 x 40 cm of spacing. While the plant has low nutritional requirements, over-fertilizing can cause it to become too large and collapse. Notable varieties include ‘Matrona’ and ‘Purple Emperor’, which feature darker stems and leaves.
