Seelisberg Tunnel closed after fatal car accident

A fatal car accident occurred on the A2 motorway near the Seelisberg Tunnel on Friday, August 14, 2026, at approximately 03:00. A vehicle with Uri license plates veered off the road and collided head-on with the infrastructure of the tunnel's south portal.

Following the collision, the vehicle entered a technical room and caught fire. The driver died at the scene. The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the Uri Cantonal Police and the Uri Public Prosecutor's Office.

The accident caused significant damage to the operating and safety infrastructure of the Seelisberg Tunnel. As a result, the tunnel has been closed in both directions until further notice. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the expected duration of the closure.
